Materials for three-dimensional displays - How to choose them?
Advertising at the point of sale is increasingly necessary and requires greater resources. In a market where consumers have so many stimuli, PLV designers need, through their designs, to capture the customer's attention and to entertain them by valuing their product and thus be able to deliver the message that the exhibiting brand intends to send.
For this reason, three-dimensional solutions are becoming more and more common. Designs with a greater visual impact that, in addition to attracting attention, allow the customer to view the product from different perspectives, and sometimes, in very striking elements of exhibition, you can even take tours of its interior.
However, for this type of 3D solution, not all commonly used materials for displays can be considered suitable, since they must provide a satisfactory answer to the following requirements:
- Dimensional stability, even in large designs
- Easy handling, suitable for V-cutting. Repeated assembly, dry assembly
- Optimal printing support.
- Durability of the installation, possibility of outdoor structures
Dimensional stability, even in large designs
Both our FO03/FO02 (foamed PVC), FO06 (multilayer PVC), or IRIBOND GT 22 (aluminum composite panel) are stable materials that guarantee the structural integrity of the set in small format and lightweight 3D display elements.
For large format installations, such as a corporate stand or a recreational promotional attraction, materials are required to solve bulky large format structures, so it is important to optimize the weight of the assembly, since apart from the fact that the material must be sufficiently resistant, it must support the weight of the entire installation without suffering deformation.
For this type of installation, we can choose two solutions: IRIBOND, since the resistance of the composite aluminum panel is high and although the weight of the assembly is high, its execution is possible. And our FO06, a multilayer PVC panel, which with its light weight, structural stability and durability provides us with an optimal strength-to-light weight ratio.
Easy handling, suitable for V-cutting. Repeated assembly, dry assembly
A three-dimensional installation requires a substrate that allows detailed cutting in V-grooves, to facilitate folding, through quick and economical handling. In addition, in many cases these are installations with high mobility, so they are designed to be able to be assembled and disassembled on several occasions, so the material must ensure that the folded point does not weaken. It is essential to choose an iron that can withstand intensive use at this point and, at the same time, maintains its structural integrity.
For an assembly that is as simple as possible and efficient for the customer, it is better to use assemblies and to completely rule out the use of adhesives, screws or rivets.
A precise CNC cut allows the creation of machined elements that maintain their functional performance even after multiple uses. This is only possible if rigid plates are used that are easy to mill, drill and cut.
Materials such as FO06 or GT22 allow for this wide range of operations, ensuring the integrity and durability of the solution.

Optimal printing support
Ink adhesion is the ability of the pigment to adhere to the surface of the printing medium, either mechanically or chemically. Color retention is the ability of printed material to maintain colors for an extended period without fading.
FO01-FO02/FO03 sheets, standard solid or foamed PVC, are excellent options from a print quality point of view for medium-sized exposure formats. Aluminium composite sheets, GT22 can show great strength and satisfactory results in the resulting print quality. But only FO06, co-extruded multilayer PVC sheets with a foam core and rigid and solid outer layers, can combine: light weight, an extra soft and uniform hard surface (allowing excellent ink adhesion and prolonged ink retention), with excellent structural integrity to support large display structures.
Durability of the installation, possibility of outdoor structures
The composite aluminum supports allow installations exposed to the elements, due to their waterproofness and color stability to the action of ultraviolet rays. PVC supports can be used in installations exposed to the elements, due to their waterproofness and resistance to corrosion, although they should not be subjected to temperatures exceeding 60ºC. In addition, like IRIBOND plates, they have an excellent response to the action of different chemicals, thus allowing for quick cleaning and disinfection of the surface.
