Thermoplastic Sheets - Kydex
KYDEX - material for demanding applications
In this article, we would like to introduce you to a material that is very common in the United States and little known in Europe, the Kydex.
Kydex is a thermoplastic copolymer based on PVC + Acrylic Polymers (PMMA). Initially designed for aeronautical purposes, it combines the hardness, strength and thermoformability of acrylics and the chemical resistance, and the fire retardancy of PVC polymers.
It comes in solid plates with a minimum thickness of 0.7 to 12 mm thick in a wide variety of colors and textures. Its specific weight ranges from 1.31 gr/cm3 to 1.52 gr/cm3 depending on the Kydex variety chosen.
Its main features include:
-Impact resistance: Superior to compact polycarbonate, ABS and other thermoplastics.
-Stiffness.
-Moisture Absorption.
-No pre-drying is required for thermoforming: Unlike hygroscopic plastic materials such as ABS and GRFV (Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester), Kydex is very hydrophobic (very low water absorption).
Kydex applications
-Public transport interiors (planes, trains, etc.)
-Components of medical equipment.
-Coatings for clean rooms.
-Orthopedics.
-Hobbies (covers for knives or weapons).
-Furniture.
-Signage.
